Hello! I’m a college senior writing about my favorite genre: young adult dystopian fiction. Don’t know what a dystopia is? Well…

A dystopia is, in literature, an often futuristic society that has degraded into a repressive and controlled state, often under the guise of being utopian. Dystopian literature has underlying cautionary tones, warning society that if we continue to live how we do, this will be the consequence.

There are many troubling issues in society today such as war, overpopulation, consumerism and environmental negligence. However I find reading about these topics in adult non-fiction to be depressing and overly-condemning. Conversely, when reading a young adult novel that features such issues in a dystopian world, I appreciate the subtle implications about our society and enjoy the fast-paced plot line. These social issues suddenly become less pretentious and more accessible for discussion, especially for young adults.

Each week we’ll talk about a different book: why it was awesome, why it wasn’t awesome and how it may be a little closer to non-fiction than we think.
